Edvard Munch's iconic pastel "The Scream" (1895), on view in the final pendant gallery of the Neue Galerie's current exhibition "Munch and Expressionism." This picture is still encased in its original frame, upon which Munch inscribed a poem relating his acute experience with the Scream or "der Schrei" in nature. As with many great tormented artists across the arc of history, the work they create in response to personal suffering is deeply felt, enduring, and absolutely spectacular.
"I was walking along the road with two friends / The Sun was setting - the Sky turned blood-red / And I felt a wave of Sadness - I paused / tired to Death - Above the blue-black / Fjord and City, Blood and Flaming tongues hovered / My friends walked on - I stayed behind - quaking with Angst - I felt the great Scream in Nature."
